                                                                                          August 4, 2008

 Dear Parents,

The 2008-2009 school year at Our Lady of Mercy Academy is about to begin.  This year should prove to be most exciting for you and your children.  We have expanded our curriculum, added two new classes, changed our uniforms and moved some classrooms.

This year we will be introducing Everyday Math in pre-S & K, Kindergarten and grades 4 and 6.  We will continue our work with the Rutgers Literacy Collaborative in Writer’s Workshop and balanced literacy.  As the only Catholic School in New Jersey that is a member of the Collaborative, OLMA is setting a standard for language arts literacy.  Please forgive me for bragging, but I am so proud of our involvement in this program and for the work the children and teachers have done in language arts literacy.

You will see some new faces at school in September; including Casey Kovar, grade 6 teacher and Renee Romanelli, grade 1 teacher.  Our new art teacher is Mary Coviello and Mark Woodward will be our physical education teacher (he has a great British accent).  Sylviarose D’Anna is our new pre-k teacher with a new classroom as well; the library has been moved downstairs to accommodate her class.

Attached is the final version of the 2008-2009 calendar.  Please note that school begins for K-6 on September 3rd and for pre-S & K on September 4th

Our Lady of Mercy Academy’s vision is to “Set the Standards for Excellence” and it is our commitment to provide every student with the values, knowledge and skills needed to achieve their full potential in a joyful and Catholic faith-based environment.  The education of children is a partnership and we look forward to your continued support, which is so vital to our school.

Attached please find some preliminary information to prepare your child for the first days of school.  All of us at Our Lady of Mercy Academy are looking forward to seeing you in September.

Uniforms – Summer uniforms will be worn on the first day of school.

Lunch – The HSA will again sell hot lunches.  Notices will be sent home the first week of school.  Enclosed is the milk order for the year.  Please return this form by August 31, 2008.

School Supplies – A list of the required supplies (K-6) is enclosed.  These items should be purchased for the first day of school.

Tuition Reminder – Tuition payments are due to Tuition Management and Extended Care payments are to be sent to the school, due on the first day of the month.

Medical Records – Health records must be in the nurse’s office with up-dated information and all the required immunizations completed.

Pre-School and Pre-Kindergarten – students will enter school through the Parish Center doors, where they will be met by their teacher and escorted to their classroom.

Extended Care – Once again, we are offering a five-day Extended Care Program, from 2:10 – 5:30.  The registration fee and monthly payment can be made to Our Lady of Mercy Extended Care.  Payment for the Extended Care Program is due by the first of the month and sent to the school.  Parents must sign out before taking their child. A note must be provided for anyone other then the parent to pick-up their child.  If you are interested in before school care (7:30 – 8:00), please call me.

*NOTE:  Please remember that the safety and security of our students is of primary importance, therefore all visitors must report to the office.  Please use the front doors of the school on Whippany Road.

In closing, I take this opportunity to thank you for giving us your child(ren) to educate.  Through our combined efforts, this year will be one of extraordinary success.  Enjoy the rest of your summer.

                                                           Sincerely,

                                                          Elizabeth Ventola
