                                                                                             February 22, 2007

 Dear Parents,

Great news!  Our Lady of Mercy Academy will be offering an after-school enrichment program beginning March 19, 2007.  This outstanding program offers four possible course selections; Chess, Science Wizardry, Yoga, and the World of Magic.

Science Wizardry- This class will have exciting interactive activities that will instill in your child a clearer understanding of how science affects the world around them.  Through Science Wizardry, your child will be able to touch, see, hear, smell, and taste what science is really all about.  Rockets, lasers, slime, bubbling potions and chemical reactions are just a few of the class topics Science Wizardry offers.  (K – Grade 5)

o Yoga for Kids – This class is tailored to the young student and will introduce children to the life changing practice of yoga.  Students will learn basic yoga postures and breathing techniques through creative storytelling, music, and cooperative games.  Students will perform a variety of yoga postures to help with strength, balance, focus and developing both sides of their brain.  Children will also benefit from the relaxation period at the end of each class, learning how to calm and relax themselves.  Get your child involved in a healthy way to exercise and energize the mind, body, and soul, and build a strong foundation to last a lifetime.  Yoga promotes focus, inner calm, and confidence.  Yoga is a terrific way for kids to build a foundation for life-long well being.  (Pre-K – Grade 5)

o Chess Enrichment Class – Two sessions of Chess will be offered; one for Pre-K (4 year olds) and one for K-5.  This class covers all the chess pieces, special moves (castling, en passant), key chess tactics (i.e., Pins, Forks, Double Attacks, Skewers, Double Checks, etc.) and gives the students an opportunity to play competitively against each other in a supervised mode.  The chess lessons will be geared to the Beginner’s playing level but can be tailored to more advanced students over time. The class will solve checkmate puzzles, learn basic opening strategy, help them understand key defense strategies, and solve simple endgames (i.e. K+Q v K, K+R v K).  In addition, the students will get the opportunity to play Team and Bughouse chess during the session.  Homework will be given out periodically to test the student’s understanding of the lessons.  If your child likes to think and work on puzzles, this is a great class to enroll them in and see them develop their chess skills during the session.  (Pre-K – 5)

o The World of Magic – Your child’s self-esteem will soar as they learn self-confidence, hand-eye coordination, tricks, and presentation skills thanks to the fascination and fun of MAGIC!  This learning experience in magic focuses on hands-on instruction.  Students will explore several magic effects and are taught to perform magic with common everyday items.  The skills and techniques mastered in this class will last a lifetime.  Age-appropriate and developmentally appropriate skills are taught in a non-competitive environment.  Classes are loaded with laughter and learning.  All supplies are included.  (K – 5)

A demonstration preview of the program will be presented to students and parents on March 5th from 1:00 p.m.- 2:00 p.m. in the gym.  A chess demonstration will be held on March 8th from 2:30 p.m.- 3:30 p.m.  We hope you will attend these introductions to the program.  We know that you will love these programs as will your child.

Each course will be offered l day per week (M-T-Th-F) from 2:30 – 3:30 for ten weeks.  Cost is $130.00 per ten week course offering.  More information will be provided after the demonstration on March 5th.

We are thrilled to be able to offer these activities to your child and hope to further expand these enrichment programs for the 2007-2008 school year year.

Very truly yours,

Elilzabeth Ventola
